A Fund for Aboriginal Candidates

The Aboriginal Peoples' Commission encourages the participation of Aboriginal people at all levels of the Liberal Party of Canada, including Members of Parliament. One way of achieving this goal is to assist in funding electoral campaigns.

The Aboriginal Electoral Endowment Fund was established to help us achieve this objective. It encourages Aboriginal communities to become involved in the electoral process, and assists with recruiting and helping Aboriginal candidates get elected.

The APC launched the Aboriginal Electoral Endowment Fund at a special dinner with the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, in conjunction with the Liberal Party of Canada Biennial Convention on March 19, 1998.

Our dream is to increase Aboriginal representation in Parliament. Our vision is to build up our fund to assist Aboriginal Liberal candidates in getting elected to the House of Commons.

You can help fulfill this vision by encouraging the involvement of Aboriginal communities in the federal electoral process, by developing a candidate selection and nomination strategy for Aboriginal People during a federal election campaign, and by contributing financially to the Aboriginal Electoral Endowment Fund.

Since it's launch, the Aboriginal Electoral Endowment Fund has supported many First Nations, Métis and Inuit candidates,  most notably during the 2006 election when the Liberal Party put forward a record of 16 Aboriginal candidates.
 
The Trustees of the Fund are the Co-Presidents and Vice-President (Finance) of the Aboriginal Peoples' Commission and the Chief Financial Officer of the Liberal Party of Canada. Chief Bill Williams of Squamish First Nation has been appointed by the Prime Minister as a permanent trustee.
